Giulietta delivers the Christmas Tree – Giulietta’s word on Wednesday

Tree G 2 Giulietta delivers the Christmas Tree Giuliettas word on WednesdayOh the excitement, the relentless questions, the continuous badgering, the eager, innocent spirits of a 2 and 3 year old….. “When are we going in our red car to get our Christmas tree”? “Stop the car there are Christmas Trees over there”!! What if we don’t have our Christmas Tree when Santa comes”? “I think the man in the shop has no Trees left”. “I will be good if we can go in the car and get the Christmas Tree…” …. ENOUGH!! Much earlier that usual, yesterday we caved and went to buy the Christmas Tree – Such an event!! Even Rory left work early for the occasion.

The five of us piled into our sparkley red Giulietta and went off to buy THE TREE!! Always a difficult one, it usually generates an argument. Rory thinks we have 17foot ceilings (we don’t). He likes ones that would dwarf Giulietta in a room. I prefer a neat, pretty one. One thing we are agreed on though is that is has to be a fresh.  Like with our car we like the real thing! There is nothing like the smell of the fresh pine tree to make you realise the wonderful silly season is here.

So off  in Giulietta to Blackrock College to select the tree. The form amongst the five of us was festive and happy. Sing songs galore. The boys are preparing for their Christmas play and Ollie is earnestly learning his Christmas tunes (his rendition of Jingle bells from the back seat is not for the faint hearted –  gets his voice from his father. Voice of an angel….. not). The students in the school organise the trees every year and, while they are expensive, profits go to The Society of St Vincent de Paul who I believe are the most worthy Irish charity to support throughout the year.

Once the tree was selected it had to be trimmed, a hole drilled at the bottom for the stand and then put into a plastic wrapper. The boys never uttered a word. They thought they had stepped into a scene from Bob the Builder.

Over to Rory to pay for the newest addition in the house and then onto Giulietta’s roof. We had rope with us that secured her. The lads were transfixed. While we were there we were telling the students about the realpeople.ie competition. They offered to take a family picture and have promised to log on and follow the competition. I could see them imagining how great it would be to own such a cool car.

Driving home was special. We had Christmas songs in Itunes so we managed to keep Ollie and Thomas quiet for five minutes while we put on the most appropriate Christmas Driving song…. It felt great. Rory, me, Ollie, Thomas and April cruising home, just as it was getting dark in our red Giulietta with THE CHRISTMAS TREE on top……. Yes I am definitely in the Christmas spirit now…….

Giulietta has gone crackers for the festive season

98 fm girls Giulietta has gone crackers for the festive season

Record attempt

Christmas was nearly cancelled last week when Giulietta had a small accident and had to be returned to Agnelli House for a repair job. I won’t go into it here but suffice to say the drive home from Cork home was NOT pretty!! ( I did learn however that Giulietta is good for relationships…. very hard to stay cross with your other half for too long in such a happy, beautiful car!!)…. Moving on…. the crew in Alfa Romeo Ireland were, as always, really great, supportive and helpful.  Big thanks to Aoife, Karen, Carl and Roisin. They even gave me a new Giulietta to drive while my beautiful girl is being fixed. I have wondered before if I made the correct choice with my proud silver/grey which I love and now I have a chance to decide. For the festive season (well until my girl is fixed) I am driving a stunning Alfa Giulietta in Alfa Red. I will keep you all posted with how we get along.

t and a w G Giulietta has gone crackers for the festive season Our first adventure together was last Friday when we went, along with April, to Hanover Quay to support the homeless charity Simon in it’s attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for the most simultaneous Christmas crackers pulled. Over 460 people showed up to help smash the record!

It was a cold, wet day in Dublin, but that didn’t stop lots of very generous people from gathering together. The Dublin Gospel Choir were on hand throughout, singing Christmas carols and doing a great job of spreading festive cheer to everyone bracing the cold.

Unfortunately the record still stands undefeated as we didn’t hit the target. I have to say getting back into our new red lady was a delight as we were freezing afterwards. I cranked the temperature up to 30 and within seconds myself and April were toastie again!

Alfa And Fiat 2 Giulietta has gone crackers for the festive season Alfa and Fiat 3 Giulietta has gone crackers for the festive season Alf and Fiat front Giulietta has gone crackers for the festive season

It was a red baptism of fire for our new family car. Hanover Quay is instantly recognisable by it’s red “sticks”. To complement and introduce our red lady to our family we also met  Giulietta’s Italian pals the 98FM red funky Fiat 500′s and the red Thunder bus along with the red Thunder Team. I think she felt instantly at home with us….. She better not get too comfortable… I am still having pangs of guilt over our silver girl……. missing her madly!!

Considering it was such a dull day Giulietta and all the other reds brought fun and festive cheer to a very worthy cause.

Giulietta has gone crackers for the festive season

This week’s song was an easy choice. Maybe not the best driving song but a definite world record breaker and a perfect fit for today’s blog….. Take it away; Boomtown Rats, U2 , Spandau Ballet, Bananarama, Midge Ure, Sting, Kool & the gang, Genesis etc etc…

Task 5 – Five people get real about Giulietta

For Task 5 we were asked to find 5 Real People who we believe are the perfect target market for the stunning Alfa Romeo Giulietta. I don’t believe there is anyone I know, young or old,  male or female, car fanatic or car geek, who is not in the perfect target market for the stylish, reliable, exciting Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

I had to narrow down the “target market” so I picked some of my friends. They all fall into the age group of 35 – 40. Each of them is a busy professional, all are very dependent on their car driving the highways and byways of Ireland. Some have  young families and children to consider others don’t. Each of them loves cars and have been following me closely throughout the Real People Competition.  I gave them (except my sister who has yet to get her full licence!!) my Giulietta to take for a drive. One of them decided to go to a meeting …… in Cork!! Here is what they thought of our silver beauty….

Giulietta gets you ready for Winter – Giulietta’s word on Wednesday

SNOW Giulietta gets you ready for Winter Giuliettas word on WednesdayOkay, so you would never think it with our current good weather but winter is upon us and todays  blog will give you some tips to ensure safe driving throughout the “birr” season. I did lots of internet research and it seems that if we we spend a little time preparing our cars for the cold season it can really pay off. I am very lucky to be driving a spanking new 20111 Alfa Romeo Giulietta but some of the practical tips will apply to me also. I know how horrible it is if you are caught unprepared in awful weather. Last winter I spent six hours stuck at East Wall in Dublin. I was five months pregnant at the time and there were articulated lorries skidding all around me. Very scary.

All cars needs extra preparation to cope well with winter weather. Winter driving conditions also mandate driving differently. Snow and ice need to be taken seriously and prepared for. After the horrendous weather last December make sure this year that your car is as prepared as you are. Going the extra mile by getting your vehicle ready for winter and learning what it takes to drive safely through ice and snow could save your life.

Below are a few simple tips from www.howstuffworks.com which could keep your car running all winter long. Bad weather conditions can cause havoc on the roads for motorists. With the Christmas period just around the corner, many of us will be travelling longer distances than usual to visit friends and family.

  • Get your car serviced - Take your car to a mechanic and check out the following: battery antifreeze level, thermostat, heater, breaks and defroster. Fixing any mechanical problems now will hopefully reduce the risk you will break down at a later date.
  • Check to make sure your tyres have adequate tread. If the treads are worn, replace them. Pump up your tyres. To help lower the risk of skidding, check both your car’s tyre condition and pressure are correct before you drive. The current legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but during the winter months it is a sensible idea to ensure your tyres have at least 3mm of tread depth.
  • Look after your lights. Dark mornings and dark evenings can make driving extremely dangerous. It is therefore crucial to ensure all your lights are clean and working properly. Always replace any broken bulbs immediately. Make sure the front and rear lights are working, especially the car’s flashing hazard lights.
  • Often in the winter, the windshield wiper fluid may freeze. Instead of toughing it out until spring, exchange the fluid with one made especially to spray in freezing conditions.
  • Check the spray nozzles of your windshield-washer system. Sometimes, they get blocked by wax or debris. Use a needle or pin to clear blocked nozzles.
  • Road salt commonly used during winter can damage your car’s paint. Rinsing it off every once in a while can help, but a good wash and coat of fresh wax will go a long way in preventing corrosion and keep your vehicle looking like new.

A winter accident could leave you stuck on the side of the road. Packing your car with a few essentials will help keep you safe and ready for whatever conditions occur on your trip.

  • Keep the diesel/petrol tank at least half full throughout the winter. This will reduce condensation, making your vehicle easier to start on cold mornings.
  • Make sure your mobile it’s charged and bring it with you. A car charger for the phone is also a smart device to keep in the car.
  • Always store a snow/ice scraper in your car. A first-aid kit is another must-have item to keep on hand.  I have mine in the handy, accessible side compartment in the boot. It should include all the usual items plus winter extras like flashlights, a fresh supply of batteries, blankets, matches, extra clothes, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks. Peanuts and granola bars are good protein- and carbohydrate-rich foods. Honestly my experience getting stuck in the snow last year would have been much easier If I had food/something to drink with me.
  • Clear off your car each time you go out for maximum visibility. Don’t forget the hood, roof, and your head and taillights. I nearly crashed last year when someone in front of me lost the foot and a half of show they had on their roof.
  • Before you go, listen to the radio for announcements about accidents, road closings, and road advisories.
  • Plan your route ahead of time to avoid any roads that become dangerous during bad weather. If a road is closed or blocked, do not attempt to continue on this route.
  • Let someone know your route so if you do become stranded, your family can let authorities know where to start looking.

LEARN HOW TO HANDLE A SKID!!

  • Use gentle impulses while driving: accelerate gently, turn slowly, and brake carefully and early. Avoid unexpected quick movements that could put you in a spin by leaving ample room between you and the next car. Anticipate turns, stops, and lane changes well before they occur. Don’t go too slow. Your car will need some momentum to push through heavier snow without getting stuck.
  • Steer clear of trucks. They are heavier than cars and need considerably longer stopping distances. Their tyres also tend to spray snow and rain into parallel lanes, further hindering your visibility. I have first hand experience of this and it is very scary.
  • See and be seen. Always keep your lights on while driving through rain, snow, and fog.

DRIVE SAFELY !! That meeting, creche pick up, appointment etc can wait.

Get there safely! ARRIVE ALIVE!

Todays great driving sone is one that reminds me of driving through snow. It was used in a great Coors light ad campaign in Ireland. The music is ‘Type A Jitters’ by Saso taken from their second album ‘I Can Do Nice’. I love it and I think it suits the wintery weather. One for driving to when the Giulietta is in All Weather mode.

An ode to Giulietta – Giulietta’s word on Wednesday

It is a mad and manic week and I have not had a minute to myself.  Rory is away I’m home alone and relying on Giulietta big time. It seems like when I am not hurtling down the Blackrock road to the creche in RTE  with the boys I am on the Stillorgan dual carraigway bringing them home. In between it is appointments, shopping, laundry, general sorting out of chaos etc etc. Needless to say blogging has fallen to the bottom of the list.

However in the very rare moments of peace (usually when the Giulietta stop mode kicks in and I only have April in the car) I have reflected on how lucky I am to be driving a reliable, luxurious, safe car and I thought it is time to show my Giulietta how much I really appreciate her.  No not another valet, not even an exciting roadtrip….. a poem. Well, a love poem really. Every girl deserves  at least one and this week Giulietta is getting her own.

To date every aspect of my blog has been completely my own but I have to confess in advance that I did not write “An Ode to Giulietta”.  A friend of mine did. His name is Rob Sadlier. He is a complete Alfa fanatic and he entered the Real People competition in the early days. At the time Rob was driving a 156, and he has since upgraded to a beautiful 159 which he completely loves. He has a fight on his hands getting to drive her though as his wife, Anna, is also a massive Alfa Romeo fan. Both of them follow the blogging and are fans of the competition. This is Rob’s poem. I think it is super even if I don’t agree with him on the best Alfa Romeo colour. When it comes to the Giulietta I love her in steely, strong, sophisticated Grey.

Aviva An ode to Giulietta Giuliettas word on Wednesday

An Ode to Giulietta

How vainly they themselves do bring
To drive a number or the rings,
And their pragmatic drivings be
Crown’d from some want of status see,
Whose short and narrow-minded gaze
Does prudently their toils repay;
While all the joy and passion starts
To weave the garlands of the heart!

Fair pleasure, have I found thee here,
Cuore sportivo, thy spirit dear!
Mistaken long, I sought you then
In status and the eyes of them:
Your sensuous lines, in here be found,
I am to thrill and passion bound:
Society is all but rude
To this sublime beatitude!

No grey nor blue has ever fed
So amorously as your rosso red.
Mad lovers, cruel in their shame,
Say in these cars their mistress’ name:
Little, alas! they know or heed
How far these beauties yours exceeds!
Fair car! Should I thine engine stoke,
No name shall but your own be spoke.

What wondrous life in this I steer!
The Alfa growl about my ears;
Those luscious cylinders make her sing
As the road beneath to her does cling;
The sun and sea and sight of beach
Into our view themselves do reach;
Swelling con brio, as we pass,
The waves rush forward then break like glass.

When we have run our passions’ heat,
The others make their best retreat:
Those cars, that mortal boredom chase,
Are ten a cent in every place;
Giuiletta bursts the greyness so
Only that she might let passion flow;
Why operate a mere machine
When Giuiletta rhymes with all your dreams.

This weeks driving Giulietta song….

I was listening to Blur’s fourth album, The Great Escape, in Giulietta yesterday. How did I forget how good they were. Here is a classic Blur song. Great for driving to and if you see me screaming and headbanging driving along the Blackrock road it is not at the kids. It is at Damon Albarn’s fantastic tunes, energy and lyrics. You can’t help but join in!!

Go on download it. I challenge you to remain still!  Following todays theme it is quite poetic too!!

11-11-11-11-11-11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features

Just a few minutes ago on 11th November 2011 at 11 seconds past 11 minutes past 11 o’clock, the time and date was a perfect same-numbered palindrome, reading the same backwards as forwards – an event which can only happen on one day every 100 years. So to mark the moment I thought I would do a blog about my favorite 11 features of our Alfa Romeo Giulietta. I also marked the moment by taking a picture at that time showing what we and our Giulietta were doing on the day at the hour.

There are so many features that I could blog about but I decided to choose the ones that either daily make my heart skip a beat with joy as they are so stylish and so distinctively “Alfa” or the features that as a family I now consider essential for safe, practical and luxurious ferrying of our most precious cargo. Some of them may not be the most cutting edge technology that Giulietta has to offer though many are. However these are the 11 that stick out in my mind that enhance the Real People Family Alfa Romeo Giulietta driving experience.

Alfa Grille 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features

1. The distinctive badge and Alfa Grille: The front shield shaped grille of our Giulietta catches my eye every morning she looks so stunning, strong and proud and well let’s just say it makes me smile every time!!

ollie passenger seat 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features

2 The rear passenger doors: The Giulietta comes only as a five-door hatchback, but they are disguised by concealing the doorhandles. I love this deceptive feature as it makes practical, perfect family car look like a stylish sports car. So many people have commented on this subtle feature whilst surveying her.

3 in the back 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso FeaturesBellinter backseat 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features

3. Spacious back seat : A couple of my blogs have already covered the fantastic back seat. In this case I will let the pictures tell the story. So much space!! Three ladies or three kids take your pic. All can travel in comfort.

back seat cupholders 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features

alfa flag 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features4. Rear seat armrest: There is a handy armrest in both the front and back seat. I have not yet blogged about the  wide padded centre rear armrest. It has pop-out cup-holders and built-in storage tray. Soooo useful with the boys for food, drinks, books and toys etc. In addition you can  pull the armrest forward and access the rear of the car if required. Our lads love this feature, crawling to and from the boot. I find it a useful feature and have been known to use it as a threat when they are really doing my head in. As in “if you don’t stop fighting with your brother, throwing your toys at my head and screaming when I am driving I will put you through the armrest into the boot”. It works!!  No reports to my local social work department please!!

boot 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features5. The boot: I have written extensively in previous blogs about the 350 litre of bootspace. Fantastic and all a family will need. Takes two buggies. My shopping weekly etc etc. Super bootspace and a lovely Alfa badge/button on the boot to press when opening if you are not using the automatic open button on the Giulietta key.

roofbars 2 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso FeaturesRoofbars 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features6. Roof bars : I have somehow lost the pictures of the roofbox on the Giulietta and as the bars are not currently on her  so these are a couple from before. Regular blog readers know that we make many trips to Cork and with the Lusso we have roofbars (thank Alfa Romeo Ireland). They are so useful for a family, easy to put on the car and the Giulietta still looks great with them on.

passenger air bag 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features

7. Passenger Airbag activate/deactivate feature: I have a video and a blog written on this worth looking at. It is a feature I use regularly when I have April in the front seat beside me. In summary Alfa Romeo have installed a simple to use activate/deactivate passenger airbag function.  Just remember it is important to switch the air bag back on immediately once the baby seats are no longer in the frontseat. Check out the blog for more information.

sat nav1 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features

8. Sat Nav and Bluetooth: The Giulietta Lusso has the latest version of the Blue&Me infotainment system, which integrates Bluetooth, sat-nav and music storage in one unit. It is a fantastic, clever system that I feel really spoilt with. The kids love that they can pick their own music. I hopefully will never get points for chin wagging on the phone again and I cannot imagine driving without it now!!

Dual air con 11 11 11 11 11 11 : My favorite 11 Giulietta Lusso Features9. Dual Zone efficient heating and cooling: I did not ever think this would be such a useful feature but often myself and Rory have the temperatures set differently and I particularly use it when little April is in the front seat. She is often quite cold so I crank up her heating whilst leaving mine a little cooler. It is these seemingly little things that make driving Giulietta such a joy!

10. The 5 Star Safety : I have blogged about this most important feature often so will just sum up here by reminding you that Giulietta is actually Europe’s safest compact car, having received the the best rating, a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.  Europe’s New Car Assessment Programme is an independent body that assesses the safety performance of cars sold in Europe. Look at previous blogs for further information on this as it really is crucial and it requires a lot more in depth explanation than I have recorded here.

I could go on and on but must get this blog live.  Some other amazing features, Start/stop technology, DNA feature, the seat belt reminder lights etc etc…..

11. How did we mark the moment 11-11-11-11-11-11-11?

We drove to April’s new early learning school for an introduction morning. Our Giulietta as always was there ferrying us safely to and from Glenageary.

Have a lovely day everyone and safe driving!! Best of Luck to our wonderful new President!!

Three ladies in the backseat… Giulietta’s Word on Wednesday

My blogs tend to focus on how we find our Alfa Romeo Giulietta as a family car. (Amazing!!! We LOVE her!)… Last weekend however I got to take Giulietta away with some of my girlfriends for the weekend. Myself, April, Giulietta and five girlfriends cruised to Bellinter House in Navan for a long overdue catch up.

My friends have been great supporting me in the Real People Competition so I volunteered to drive and give them a taste of the beautiful, stylish Alfa. They were very excited; finally a chance to see the start/stop in action, listen to our favorite music, experience the DNA function for themselves, and enjoy being chauffeured in a devine and stunning car.

I had the valet done, (thank you ECB for dropping interest rates!) not a sniff of nappies, jellies or 5 day old toast….. however I could sense some reluctance when they heard that three of them would travel in the backseat. The Giulietta is set up with three lap-sash safety belts in the back and I assured them there would be plenty of room for them and for their bags in the boot….(I now get why Rory gets so exasperated when I pack so much for a night away…. what do we need all the “stuff” for?). The picture below is proof Giulietta has bootspace for four girls and a baby for a weekend away! I filled up on Diesel and collected my pals from their homes in Sutton, Swords and Clontarf and we were on the way.

Each of them commented how comfortable they were in the backseat en route.  I found that Giulietta still had plenty of pep with a little more weight on board (careful Therese). Indeed on the motorway I had to use the cruise control function because with all the excitement and chat I kept inching over the speed limit. We all agreed that the Giulietta is as nice to travel in as to be seen travelling in! One of the girls who is a big fan of her Golf GTI admitted being more than impressed with Giulietta admiring her delicate curves, stylish design, opulent interior and her lively peppy spirit.

We had a wonderful weekend and as a Real People finalist I felt so proud and delighted pulling up to Bellinter House with my great friends, gorgeous daughter and my stunning Giulietta. Admiring glances all round!! As for the gossip, chat and fun…. Well as all ‘Alfisti’  know… What goes on tour with Alfa Romeo Giulietta, stays on tour with Alfa Romeo Giulietta!!

If anyone has spares to sell or knows  how I might get some PULEASE get in touch….. Might even give you a drive in my Giulietta!! Enjoy!!

Task 4 – Giulietta goes Boo in the night…

Task number four asked us to  “Explain why being an Alfa Romeo driver is more than just owning a car”. My experience since I won the Alfa Giulietta to drive for a year is that she has become an integral part of our family. She goes on all our journeys and is involved in our experiences… Including Halloween…… whoo woo….. What other brand of car could give a family and their friends such fun and scary entertainment!…..

Giulietta’s Word on Wednesday – Giulietta on the high seas

While our Giulietta is generally stylish a road loving lady she does have a keen interest in sailing the high seas. Sometimes she likes to come along but usually she just ferries us to the sailing club and keeps a watchful eye on us from the shore!

Recently we took her on the Passage East Car Ferry which crosses the River Suir. The ferry links the villages of Ballyhack in Wexford and Passage East in Waterford.

The next day Giulietta stayed on shore while we took the boys and April out sailing. I was captain for a while but I have to admit when it comes to sailing or driving for I prefer the driving experience and sportiness of my Giulietta!

Giulietta’s word on Wednesday…. Passenger Airbag and Safety!

One of my favorite features of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta that I regularly blog about is how safe she is. Safety is a particularly important for any family buying a car as half your life is spent ferrying one or another of the kids around.  Giulietta is actually Europe’s safest compact car, having received the the best rating, a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. (Europe’s New Car Assessment Programme is an independent body that assesses the safety performance of cars sold in Europe.)

Giulietta has six (yes six!) airbags and one of these is in the passenger seat. April is a very quiet little girl and sometimes to escape the MADNESS of her brothers in the back seat I put her in the much quieter and  slightly more sane front seat with me. Alfa Romeo have made this a very easy and safe way to travel with a baby as there is a simple to use activate/deactivate passenger airbag function.  Just remember it is important to switch the air bag back on immediately once the baby seats are no longer in the frontseat. Have a look at the video to see how easy it is even while two boys eager to go to a party keep interrupting me!

Driving with babies in the front seat is okay as long as the babies are in safe, age appropriate seats, the passenger seat is pushed right back and the passenger air bag is off. While I am on the subject of car seats we had a demonstration at the creche on car seat safety and I have attached the RSA recommendations below. Very interesting… Worth a look for any of you who are travelling with smallies!
