And she's back.... Yes our favorite, sleek silver grey girl is with us again..... Yey!!

I had hoped to put together a video of the past year featuring Giulietta to finish the realpeople competition however I think making the advert took it’s toll on our mac and it is limping along now and taking ages to download new footage so I am going to do a final blog with a 12 pictures one from each month.

I have just checked out youtube and my adverts have now had 750 views for the 30″ advert and 597 views for the 60″ advert. I did a check on my views for all all my other Giulietta films this year prior to putting the adverts on youtube and on average their views have increased by 250 – 400 views per video in the past three weeks. This suggests that once people have viewed my advert they are looking for more and learning about the features of our gorgeous car and seeing the other great adventures and fun we have had with Giulietta over the past year. My favorites with Thomas trying to get in to the car and drive away “Giulietta and an obsessed two year old” has had 1,011 views and the video with the boys washing Giulietta to Benny Hill music has had 954 views. “Finding Giulietta” our origional video has had 3,263 views over the year.  Where has the year gone…

Thanks to Aoife, Adrian and Carl and all the gang in Agnelli House and Tractamotors. You have been great and you gave us a fantastic competition.

Have a great 2012 one and all and go buy an Alfa Romeo Giulietta…..

Alfa Romeo Giulietta – The Advert

30″ Alfa Romeo Giulietta Advert – Family Category

60″ Alfa Romeo Giulietta Advert

Thinking behind the Alfa Giulietta advert.

My advert evolved directly from my experiences of driving the Alfa Romeo Giulietta for the past year. This time last year I was pregnant with my third baby and everyone was telling me I would need a new car…. a people carrier, a jeep, a 7 seater. I was horrified. I just did not want a big clunky “mumsie ” car. I love cars and I am doing my very best to hold onto a bit of style, independence and individuality all be it with three crazy children to ferry about and look after.

Enter the Alfa Romeo Giulietta…..Interestingly when people heard I had actually won the Giulietta for a year I got some comments about it being a mans car. That Rory would probably be more into it. The same people have changed their opinion. I think seeing the Giulietta and how it works for us as a family car has changed that perception. Most of my pals have driven our Giulietta at some stage over the year and now all agree this is a fantastic car that ticks all the boxes for men AND women.

It was therefore a very conscious decision to make an ad that shows the Giulietta IS a perfect family car with bootspace, room for three carseats and the best possible safety standards but that just as importantly there is a car available now that women and men will want, desire and love driving. A car that you still feel like getting out of the tracksuit before you get into her, a car which reminds you that while your most precious cargo is safe that you are still cool (kind of), you have retained some style, you can still look great in and you can still get a rush out of driving.

Why when we move into the most wonderful, fulfilling, happy, challenging, stressful, funny years of our lives why should we compromise on the car we drive…..

Why Compromise… The ad…..

I hope this explanation is not necessary as the ad, if done correctly, should tell the story itself.

It tells the story of a someone (me) dressed up, happy, going out for dinner or to a gig or to meet friends etc. Driving along in N – Normal mode she looks in the rear view mirror of her Alfa Giulietta and seeing the backseat where her three children usually travel triggers happy memories. The ad changes to black and white for the memory clips. This is in keeping with my original video entry to the Real People competition. The clips show our family enjoying life over the past year with Giulietta and how integral she is to our lives now.

The ad then cuts again to colour and to the present with me driving. In great form thinking about the past year and excited about where I am going to I press D – Dynamic mode and accelerate off to have fun. I love and feel great in my practical, reliable, stylish, stunning, gorgeous to drive Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Music

The music I choose is the song I chose for the Task we were set during the year. We had four final choices and the ad can be put to any of them but in the end Arcade Fire “We used to wait” fitted best. It has a great punchy strong beat and with careful editing I think moves well with the ad. It also is one of my favorite songs by a great band.

Thanks

I have so many people to say a big thanks to but I have to start with my fellow contestants…. What a year and what a journey (excuse the pun). Sleepless nights and exhilarating driving. Many of us have put so much into the competition. Best of luck to each of you. Thanks to Aoife and all the gang in Agnelli House and Tractamotors. You have been great and you gave us a fantastic competition.

Big huge thanks to Brian for all his help filming the colour shots, and for coming to Fota when he was actually on holidays in Clonakility. To Rory for being a perfectionist and editing the ad to within an inch of both our lives. To my mum for acting in “loco parentis” and minding the kids most of the past week. To John O’Flynn, the Manager  of Fota Island Resort where we filmed the colour shots for being so accomodating and supportive. To my great blog followers throughout the year who relentlessly pushed me forward, commented and advised me (especially my family and my 12 core Alfa ladies and most especially Val and Denise). Lastly to Ollie, Thomas and April my very wonderful co-pilots.

Enjoy…. Therese

Giulietta Ad 6 – The voiceover auditions!!

The jury is out as to weather or not I am going to use a voiceover on the the ad…. The “advisory ” panel is pretty much 50/50 lads and girls and the lads are veering towards no whereas some of the girls like the edits with voiceover.

The voiceover auditions have been some of the funniest most memorable parts of the ad campaign for me. I have had a great laugh with friends and family all over the holidays “auditioning” to find the voice of Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Here is just a sample…. Thanks everyone for taking part and apologies if your not in the final cut (most of you probably can figure out why you didn’t make it!!)

The line everyone was asked to say is not the line we are using. I just choose it in the early stages as I am the “real family” entry. The line is “The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a real family car”. Please note too much Chianti, Pinot Grigio and Italian beer can affect pronunciation!!

You are probably just back at work or have smallies home from school driving you crazy. Either way you are probably feeling unmotivated and wishing it was a week ago…. Take 5 minutes and watch this. It is funny!

Comment at the end if you :

A. Star in it

B. Have an opinion as to who might be best

C. Think we should not have a voice over

Enjoy!

Giulietta Ad 5 – Shooting and editing… What a few days!

There I was thinking that the shooting was going to be the hard part. Editing – Lets just say it is a loooong process.

We shot the ad despite the rain on New Years Eve in Fota Island resort. I have to say a huge big thank you to the staff and John O’Flynn, the General Manager, of Fota who was so helpful. We were staying in one of their fabulous houses for a couple of nights and I was anxious about not having the advert recorded so in a fit of panic I asked the efficient consierge, Dave, to see would it be okay for me to film some car shots on the grounds of the hotel. Immediately the staff were all over it, interested in the competition and eager to help. They even organised a very reasonable and excellent valet. Giulietta was picked up in a pretty sorry state after the Christmas madness but she was returned like new. Stunning, stylish and strong. I was chuffed with her!

My friend, Brian, is a lot niftier with a camera so he helped us with some of the filming. I will post additional shots at the end of the camapign because as yet we STILL have not decided a final edit. This is a classic men are from mars and women are from venus project. We have had real fights regarding what looks best /should/should not go in etc. I won’t say which parts until we know the result though!!

It was lashing rain for much of the shoot and the kids were like demons. I now understand why industry people say “never work with animals or children”!! Anyway the shoot is complete and it was lots of fun, if a little embarrassing at times.

I thought that was the end of the work….. Eh not exactly. It turns out that editing is a whole new ball game! We started last night around 8pm…. Had to borrow a second computer to try and get more done… In a blind panic I rang my mum at 11.30pm asking her to take the kids today as I knew after 3 hours we were not even started. Dropped the boys off today at 11am… 13 hours later the boys are asleep in their Nana’s (thanks mum!) and we are still at it!! We have bought movie making packages, cancelled a crowd of friends who were due for tea and argued relentlessly over a half second here and a third of a second there.

Friends have come and gone and given opinions and finally an hour ago we threw a few beers at it. I think it is very nearly in the bag but I know in the morning there will be a few revisits!!

Don’t get me started on the song/ tune / music….

Giulietta Ad 4 – Marketing the Alfa Romeo Giulietta to women

Firstly, Happy New Year Everyone. Especially Happy New Year to all the contestants in the Real People Competition. None of us will ever forget the close of 2011/ start of 2012 ….. and the rain!! NOT ideal for ad making….

If I can’t film I can do more research! So with my advert being targetted at women I thought I had better learn more about the psychlogy of marketing cars to the girls.  I spent a few rainy hours learning lots and here are some key findings to fill your new year/new you brains with!

I seems that car manufacturers are aware of the increasing power of women car buyers but actually selling cars to women can be a tougher sell than to men. It is also a different type of sell so it requires a different type of advert. We shop, desire and decided differently this makes us more complicated, from the marketing and advertising perspective. Our purchase decision-making paths are different to men. For most women, there is more to a decision than bullet points listing product features on the side of a package.  They take it all in — from the causes a brand supports,  (Alfa Romeo Ireland support the charity Goal) to the friendliness of a forecourt employees, to feeling their questions are being answered and developing trust with a brand of car.

Women do consider the usual product facts: like price and quality.  However, the way they shop is different. They may have checked off everything on their list, be close to a buying, and then hear/see something that makes and emotional connection. Boom! She’s sold.  (Well at least I am)! Or a woman may be 99 percent decided on a car they wish to buy and have a short conversation with a sales team member who was a little too hard-sell — and, boom, the deal is off.

The research I have done suggests that the key to understanding how to reach women buyers is understanding how they think. Being a woman I hope I can make an advert that will appeal to men and women, but that ticks the chicks list!  One that would make one of us girls move from interest in a stunning car to booking a test drive. Having dealt with the lads in Alfa Romeo dealerships I know that if I can get some ladies to their forecourts, the service, respect, knowledge etc along with a test drive of an Alfa Romeo Giulietta will ensure sales.

To highlight how I believe women are drawn to very different marketing techniques from men I have two adverts below. Watch them and see difference between the two approaches and tell me which ad do you think the ladies would go for.

1.  Old-fashioned male communication style. (I can’t even imagine the lads being         turned by this one)

2.  Modern female communication style.

Here’s why advert number 2 is connecting with women

This advert has a contemporary female communication style because this isn’t yet another advert with a mum picking up her kids in a mini-van/ people carrier. It features a dad interacting with his son.  Women are all about relationships.  The ad also uses humor. I tried to have fun / show my Giulietta in humorous ways in many of my video blogs over the past year and always got a great reaction from followers.

This ad focuses on a benefit we girls prize above almost all else in  a car – dependability. Alfa has a long history of Italian style and beauty but this needs to be balanced with real credibility as a family car. Reliability is essential for women. Alfa have in the past had some issues around reliability however this is NOT an issue according to ALL Alfa Rome Giulietta reviews, both professional and from drivers the Giulietta, that I have read. I also have been completely immersed in my and the 7 other candidates blogs all year and not once has an issue around reliability/dependability come up.  This is a message I really have to strive to get across in my advert and it is so crucial to the prospective female market.

To finish…. I found it hard to get statistics on women drivers and what they look for in a car/car advert in Ireland so before Christmas I emailed IPC media in London as during a web search I saw that they had carried out a comprehensive survey in England to discover what makes women notice a car advert. Lynne, from IPC Media, got back in touch with lots of information. The company surveyed 7,500 women and the key statistics were:

WHAT WOMEN NOTICE IN A CAR ADVERT:

Sense of humour –  50%

Clever advert that makes you think –  48%

Really good images of the car itself  - 39%

Ad conveys information in simple and easy way –  30%

Price/finance options  - 26%

Detailed info on features –  20%

Ads featuring women driving –  21%

Something encapsulates car’s image –  19%%

Pictures of what having car represents –  17%

LOTS to think about here in what will make the final cut!!

Giulietta Advert 3:Research…. Dodgy Women Car Adverts

Having decided to target my Giulietta advert towards woman I thought I had better research how women have been used in car adverts in the past….. hmmmm definitely time for a change!! Enjoy.
vw women ad Giulietta Advert 3:Research.... Dodgy Women Car Adverts

VW Bug – Women are Soft & Gentle, But They Hit Things:                                               What a line. This is the classic “women are bad drivers” routine, a VW is no match for your wife when she gets behind its wheel. It’s almost laughable to look at, but these ads are not very old – along with their frame of mind.

bmw sexist Giulietta Advert 3:Research.... Dodgy Women Car Adverts

BMW : You know your not her first

Ick! BMW’s recent and very controversial ad for their pre-owned vehicles shows an enticing gal who, they suggest, has probably had a few partners. At least that’s what this poster wants you to think. Super dodgy I reckon.

subaru sexist Giulietta Advert 3:Research.... Dodgy Women Car Adverts

The Subaru here needs no further comment. This advert would make a feminist of me and I really am not a feminist!

But just in case the above adverts would have any of you believe that I think we should have more men doing the sexy body shots to sell cars…..

I think I will stick with the chicks and try to do an ad that does justice to both the stunning Alfa Romeo Giulietta and the ladiezzz!!

Giulietta Advert 2 … Research and Theme…

Over the ten days I have asked my blog followers what they think should be the theme of my Alfa Romeo Giulietta advert. Their thoughts have been unanimous. The ad should tie in with my theme throughout the year, namely the ad should be aimed at selling the Giulietta as a family car for real people.

Thirty seconds is such a short time that I am going to be quite definite in my target audience. My advert will be targeted at women and small-to-established families where I believe the Giulietta fits perfectly. These modern women are conventional but each has a strong independent inner voice  and also likes to do their own thing.
I am going to make an advert that sells the Alfa Romeo Giulietta as a family car for women who want to have it all. Women who want to do the “family thing” but who really do not want to lose their identity as a “Real Person”. Women who want to immerse the precious years between 30 and 45 in their families, careers and interests that make them happy. Women who are dynamic, who value their friendships, freedom and independence and who take on life’s challenges with strength and poise.

It is hard to summarise my favorite practical features in our much loved Giulietta but for the purposes of the advert I will focus on the the features I believe women (and men) value highly today. I have spoken to so many  people in the past year about what they look for in a car and I believe  Safety, Space, Style, Price and Reliability are the most important features they look for in a car.
The effects of the Irish and global financial crisis meant we are all increasingly cost conscious. In the current economic environment all consumers are scrutinizing all their purchases, so it’s critical to provide them with reasons why they should buy and Alfa Romeo Giulietta. With fuel prices and motor tax rates recently targeted in the 2012 Budget, the cost of running a car is crucial to any prospective buyer. The Giulietta’s delivers 55 miles per gallon. This is compelling and I want to try to get this message across in my advert too.

Throughout the year I have been blogging about the cutting edge technological features  of the Giulietta. However she is also a functional car that has heaps of space and superior comfort with 5 comfortable seats.
The Giulietta safest compact car ever according to Euro NCAP (5-star 2010 rating with an overall score of 87/100). Somehow I hope to get some of these messages into my advert.

My research began by asking my blog followers what sort of an advert they thought I should do. Please read some of their responses when I asked their advice. I genuinely did not encourage these responses. I asked because I knew that I was not winning the competition so I felt I needed to ask others who knew my blog their thoughts.

More  comments and my responses can be viewed on the ” Giulietta is puttin on the Ritz…. and A Giulietta ad” blog.

Ok so it’s a sexy car and you wanna put sexy back into family  car. So the yummy mummy is yummy because of the car. When u pick up the boys from school all the other boys love the car cos it’s cool… All the dad’s are admiring the lines n curves of the car. And all the moms desire the car because it’s a family car but sexy.. I have a vague feeling that something similar may have been done before.  But it’s not just a great family car its a beautiful car so everybody wants it..

Hi there Therese. I’ve really enjoyed reading your blogs throughout the year, which have been really really well written and definitely made me see the Giulietta in a different light. In my view if you want to stick with the family theme you should position it as a cool, trendy alternative to all the other family cars on the market i.e. the Ford Galaxys, Renaults etc . It’s the type of car that can fit all your families needs throughout the day (good boot, good space in back to fit car seats etc) but also allows you to look hip and cool when driving around town without the kids in the evening. I really hope you win it, cause you deserve to win it after the huge contribution you’ve made through the year.

  8. Giulietta Advert 2 ... Research and Theme...Karen says:

    Therese,

You have to stick with what you know. At the girls get together last week we were chatting about the competition and how you have achieved so much to be able to blog about a beautiful car through the prism of family life. Don’t change it now. I would look over the past year for your inspiration. None of us will ever forget the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Your gorgeous car has become part of all our lives!! You must not get complacent and doubt yourselgf. Go and make a great ad and win that car!!!

  9. Definitely think you should stick to what you obviously know and love best… your lovely family! Love your blog Therese! Cx

Giulietta Advert 2 ... Research and Theme...Bryan Leech says:

    1. Step 1
      Download this video:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD5jcs1YBio&feature=related

      Step 2
Borrow a white Giulietta for a day.

      Step 3
Reshoot all the shots featuring Uma and kids with shots of Therese, the boys and April.

      Step 4
Splice (yes I know that’s probably a term only used for 8mm movies) re-takes into the original ad. Simple!

Well, you did say not to think about it too much.

By the way, if I had a choice between Uma and Therese for the role of Alfa Romeo ambassador I’d pick Therese – a real ‘Real Person’.

Well that’s what the competition is all about, isn’t it?

    2. Giulietta Advert 2 ... Research and Theme...Bryan Leech says:

I’ve looked at the video again. You could probably just reshoot the interior shots and replace the last two shots with you own ‘reveal’ (with or without your Alfa in shot). Therefore, delete Step 2.

Seeing as your own car has changed colour this month then the ‘continuity slip’ might be forgiven.

      Kindest regards, Bryan.

All Santa wants for Christmas is a Giulietta…

I know the blogging aspect of the Real People Competition is over but I couldn’t drive a red Giulietta and not put up a visit to Santa.

Giulietta has been a complete lifesaver this Christmas. I cannot ever remember being so busy. Nobody told me before I had kids that each of them (yes even April!) has a Christmas Party, a nativity play, throw in a couple of carol singing afternons and eh hello a bootload of shopping and Christmas becomes a crazy mix of childrens engagements. We are also clinging on with dear life to actually being people who like to go out for a few drinks, dance (me) and have fun. I tell you it is a lot to fit in.  I have been in and our of our Giulietta twenty times a  day. Been in every shopping centre and city centre car park. It has been FULL on! No matter how worn out/late/ on the run I am I come towards Giulietta arms hanging off me with kids/ bags/ shopping and the sight of her beautiful Grille badge or the boot popping open makes me smile.  She is such a beauty. Serene in times of madness!!

Shopping for family and friends (Nobel prize should go to whoever came up with  Kris Kindle or I would still be stuck in the aisle in Smyths toy store) has been a big part of the past couple of weeks. Big cheer out to Michelle and the girls in Mothercare, Portlaoise who were so helpful to me last week. I was telling them about the Real People Competition and was boasting about the Giulietta boot.  They were so impressed they came out to help me fill her up. They have promised to check in on the facebook.

I have referred a couple of times to my friends in Curragh Lawn Nursing Home in Kilcullen.  All the elderly men and women and following the Real People Competition and get updates from Val, the Director of Nursing. Unfortunately they are not Facebookers!! Well they had a visit from Santa and we decided he should arrive to the Nursing home in the red Giulietta to deliver his gifts. Unfortunately it was baltic on the night so all the elderly ladies and gentlemen had to stay inside. However they ooohed and aaahed from the house at Santa’s  style.

Giulietta visits Carrigstown

Okay I confess that I am not a fan but I couldn’t resist pulling up the lovely Giulietta when I past the set of Fair City last week.

Giulietta is without a doubt a city slicker but there was no Christmas cheer to be had in McCoys and she has no need for a visit to the garage so we put her into “D” and made our getaway…

Giulietta is puttin’ on the Ritz and our last task…. A Giulietta ad…

Arrive in style. No valet rushing to move this lady on..

Wicklow is a natural scenic wonderland. Renowned for its scenery, the county is a beautiful mix of rolling mountains, wooded glens, cascading waterfallls and lakes. Where better to bring the gorgeous red Giulietta for a night away with girls!!

Before anyone says “that Therese one has a great life, nights away in fancy hotels” etc – this was my Christmas present!! My mum felt that time with her daughters and new daughter in law to be would be great. Naturally I was nominated to drive as Giulietta would fit in perfectly in such a lovely setting.

April meets Santa for the first time - It is clear who is the most excited by this!

There were nine of us in total and in a change from our usual three carseats in the backseat formation I again had three girls in the backseat. Similar to my trip to Beillinter House in November all the girls agreed that the backseat was completely comfportable for three adults in the rear. Spacious, comfortable and a luxurious drive. Everyone was happy!

RESEARCH…..BLOG FOLLOWERS I NEED YOUR HELP/ADVICE PLEASE!!!

Okay so all the contestants are into the last leg of the Real People competition. What a year it has been. Now we are on the home straight we have one final big task. I really need some feedback from my blog followers for this one. The project is set out below.

“We want you to create a 30” TV advert for the Alfa Giulietta and your blog should be used to provide information about the “video in the making”. Your video and blog will be judged by an external panel”

We were also given feedback on how we are currently ranking in the competition and I am not in the driving seat to win!!! Aaaagh like all the contestants I want to keep the Giulietta so much. With that in mind I would like you guys to please write me some thoughts/ ideas etc for the ad. I really so believe that the Alfa Giulietta is a family car and I would like to go with that theme. It is the category I won her for a year to drive in and  I think I could make a great ad. However this approach has not got me in the lead so far so I would really like to hear your views. Should I stick to the formula I am currently using. Namely make an ad that sells the Alfa Romeo Giulietta as a first class family car that would suit any family young or old. Or try something else completely new; a totally  different theme.

You have all been great support with the competition so far, listenting to me endlessly chatting  about our Giulietta, getting involved in tasks, posting my blogs and asking friends to read/ view and like and to compete properly for the last phase I would like to hear from you what direction I should go in!!

Ps…. With Christmas around the corner and nativity plays /trips around the country/ family commitments, parties,  etc etc  time is in serious short supply so please don’t over think this one. Just comment and respond asap.  Stick to family theme or change …. I have to get started this weekend as I can’t  spent too much time on the ad over the holidays. Thanks!!
