Grazie Mille!

Playing the Uke 1024x680 Grazie Mille!

Time is ticking away, tomorrow is D Day and I can’t think about anything but Redser. I doubt sleep will visit tonight so I may just spend the night driving around, enjoying every last second of style and sophistication.

I can’t believe that this is my 90th blog post and it has nearly been 12 months since the finale in the Crowne Plaza, I never thought I could feel more nervous than on that morning, but this is far far worse.

Really I just wanted to thank everybody that has helped and supported me in the course of my journey. I have had the unending support of all my friends and family and I am not going to start naming names as somebody will be left out. So thank you all for everything especially Alfa Romeo Ireland for such a wonderful opportunity, let’s hope that the Alfa Pair make a return real soon.

oh look at us 1024x680 Grazie Mille!

We'll be back!

Misery’s Antidote

The winner of the RealPeople competition will be announced on Tuesday and hopefully this will not be the last weekend that Redser & I have together. So with this in mind we were determined to get out for a nice long drive today, despite the inclement weather.

I had great thoughts of driving from Laragh to Hollywood (Wicklow), which must be one of the most breathtaking drives in Ireland, with amazing views of Glendalough and then on along the Pollaphuca resevoir. Unfortunately the further from home Giulietta and I traveled the worse the weather got. As we approached Laragh the visibility was virtually nil, so we decided to postpone the drive and looked for another destination and possibly something to eat as we would be hungry soon.

The View From Giulietta

We headed towards Rathdrum and eventually on to Avoca Village the scene of Ballykissangel where we stopped for a bite to eat and hopefully some nice photos of the Alfa pair and Giulietta enjoying a Sunday drive.

The Mill Stream

There is a small river at the mill in Avoca and I had just started taking photos of the stream as the heavens opened again and we had to run for shelter. At no stage did we get to take any photos of Giulietta today as we were too busy hiding inside staying dry in the warmth. Today would have been one of the most miserable days if not for the pleasure of driving beautiful Giulietta all around the Wicklow hills.

We eventually had to give up on the possibility of getting any kind of photos or video today as the weather was just horrendous and neither of us were brave enough to weather the elements. But with the iPod conducting the orchestra in the glovebox, the Sat Nav keeping an eye on our progress all I had to do was enjoy driving Giulietta and hope that there will be many sunny Sundays when we get to enjoy the delights of the Wicklow mountains at the wheel of Giulietta.

So with the possibility of days like today in a country such as this, the only antidote for the blues is an Alfa Red Giulietta.

Dashing, Neocosmic, Alert (D.N.A.)

It has nearly been 12 months driving Giulietta and every single day has been a pleasure. There are so many features that I have mentioned during the year but there is one in particular that stands out in Giulietta and the MiTo. That is the Alfa D.N.A system. The D.N.A system provides a tri-polar state of consciousness, three ways to drive the same car and three ways to enjoy the Alfa Romeo experience.

DNA Switch Dashing, Neocosmic, Alert (D.N.A.)

All of this is achieved through the manipulation of one little switch that has the ability to turn Giulietta in to a sedate, safety conscious, caring car that is sure of foot in all kinds adverse weather conditions, that is the all-weather mode A, alert to all the possible dangers that life may throw at you.

Flipping the switch north to D dynamic mode, turns the everyday Giulietta in to a tense, focused, eager machine that loves to be driven assertively and screams for a dashing run down a leafy b-road on a sunny afternoon, or any kind of afternoon for that matter.

The everyday mode is more than justĀ  N for normal it is neocosmic, it transcends the ordinary it feels stellar. I have decided to write this blog as by now from following the blogs you will be well aware of the D.N.A system especially as it featured in nearly all the RealPeople Giulietta TV adverts, but what you may not be aware of is how amazing Giulietta is to drive on a normal everyday.

When I was lucky enough to get the keys to Giulietta Mk I last February, virtually every journey was taken in Dynamic mode, the journeys that weren’t taken this way were due to forgetting to flip that magic switch. But the main reason for this post is that the more I have driven Giulietta the less I have used the Dynamic mode. The normal driving mode is more than adequate and at no stage have I felt Giulietta lacking or needing to switch to D. The 1.6 JTDM2 engine has more than enough torque and push to make Giulietta feel extremely mobile, while still keeping that D mode in reserve for when you feel like you would like to drive your other Giulietta.

January has been a long one this year and I can’t wait for the first week of February, the Irish chapter of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club AROC are converging in the Marble City for the first meeting of the year. Myself and Resder plan to be there with the other Alfisti that weekend and I am sure that on the spin Giulietta will slip into D and smile as we join the convoy of Alfa’s on a journey through the Kilkenny countryside.

Giulietta & The Alfa Romeo Life

At the moment every waking thought I have is Italian, it’s automotive, it’s Alfa Romeo. Being unable to concentrate on anything else I decided to put together a short montage with some of the photos from during the year, mainly of Giulietta, but also some other Alfa’s, Alfisti and people who have been touched by Giulietta and the realpeople competition. Enjoy!

The song is James Vincent McMorrow’s version of Steve Winwood’s Higher Love.

12 D Giulietta

My first 12 reg of the year in the flesh

Today I saw my first new reg of the year, I don’t know how I hadn’t seen one up to this, maybe just not paying enough attention. Nice to see another new Giulietta on the road, they really do stand out against the dross. I like the colour too, it’s Alfa Metallic Red very refined. Quality of the pics aren’t great I was rushing and only had my phone on me.

The StoryBoard (Ad Blog 17)

In the planning stages for my Giulietta Ad ‘No Ordinary Escape’ I decided to use a storyboard to try and plan the shoot for the ad especially for St Stephens Day as time outside the zoo would be limited and there would be no second chances to re-shoot. I went through several iterations of the storyboard but below are the images from the final draft, spread over 2 pages. For the actual shoot I had transferred these images to the iPad so as not to be chasing sheets of A3 around the Phoenix Park.

You will have to excuse my artistry as I can barely write anymore after using computers on a daily basis, never mind draw, which in all honesty I never had any talent for even before computers. I have included blown up segments at the bottom in case anyone is really interested in my scribblings. I think it was a great way to plan the sequence of the ad and has really helped in the editing process as I had a good idea of what needed to go where, and after my near miss with my files this week I needed all the help I could get to finish on time.

It’s All About The Audio (Ad Blog 16)

I previously posted a blog containing some of the music that I was considering using for my Giulietta ad. This ranged from classical to modern, rock to pop, initially I left nothing out. Once I had the concept nailed down for the ad my biggest decision was to use just music, or music and a voice-over. Using just a voice-over was never an option.

In my kangaroo focus groups over Christmas, basically everyone who visited me or I went to visit got dragged into the Giulietta ad debate. I had a collection of clips from previous tasks to give them an idea of what I was trying to achieve.

I had two versions of voice-over style. The first was straight-forward and informative in relation to Giulietta’s features and pricing, the second was a play on the style of nature documentary commentary, in the style of Ted Lowe (famous snooker commentator), referring to the Genus Giulietta and the Alfa Pair. While my target audience found me doing impressions of Ted quite amusing, they felt it took away from the ad and more importantly Giulietta. So in the end we decided to use plain old fashioned music, and would then convey our messages via text on the screen.

I had a few different endings for the ad. The first was the Alfa’s having a hooly after reaching freedom, the second was them having a picnic in a scenic location maybe beside a stream. The final ending I had in mind was of the Alfa Male playing the ukulele while sitting in the boot of the car. When I played my choice of music which was Israel Kamakawiwo’ole singing ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow – What A Wonderful World’, the reaction was unanimous, use the ukulele!

I was in town on Christmas Eve getting a few last gifts, when I went to get a ukulele and to my surprise there were none left, it appears to be quite a popular gift this Christmas, it seems the ukulele’s stock is rising. So quite disappointed I headed home and was planning on shooting the Alfa’s having a dance in celebration to finish the ad.

Well on Christmas Day when I visited my parents, I have never been so happy to receive a gift of a ukulele, it was disguised in a big box so I had no idea what it was. They were involved in the focus group and had gone and bought the last one in McCullough Piggot’s on the 23rd, as a surprise. So from that moment it was faith, the ukulele ending it would be and the song choice was set in stone. With the dancing ending I would have had to choose a more upbeat tune and that would be a whole other decision making process, I am glad I didn’t need to ponder.

If you would like to listen to the full version of the song click on the link below. Its a little low on quality as I had to try and shrink it.

Behind The Scenes 2 (Ad Blog 15)

This is the second set of behind the scenes photos from the making of No Ordinary Escape my Giulietta Ad. I didn’t want to overload your browsers by putting all the photos in one post.

The Alfa Pair ready for the off.

It was quite hard to see and breathe from under the masks, you would not want to have to wear them for prolonged periods.

Let's go

We were very organised, we had a list of all the shots we required for No Ordinary Escape saved on the iPad as there are no guarantees that it will ever stay dry in Ireland and when shooting out in the elements military precision is required.

An Alfa Day

Yesterday was most definitely a day in which Alfa Romeo consumed my every thought. Having barely slept a wink the previous night worrying about the ad, I would have been better getting up and finishing the ad. Then yesterday was so action packed I had no chance during the day to get anything done. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me when stopped at the lights on the Naas road, but no you would expect to see a higher concentration of Alfa’s near Agnelli House, I was surrounded by Giulietta’s. The black one is a 2.0 jtdm Lusso and the grey looks like The 1.6 jtdm Lusso.

Here are some of the bloopers and not so good shots from the making of No Ordinary Escape, it’s quite possible that the Alfa Pair will be auditioning for dancing with the stars in the near future.
